im the type of person who likes to keep things for the long term but i need functionality for the long term. i dont know much about mp3 or music players but i love the idea of an ipod. at that price for 20gb what other products are just as good if not better?

Had my iPod for over a year and still can't find anything better.

Definitely a good 'long term' purchase for me...the 20g should last me for a LONG time, and performance/interface has been perfect for me.

The iPods are very nice but I'm also hearing good stuff about iRiver. I'm not too keen on iTunes so that's likely to be my route.

I just got sony's mp3 player their network walkman. It's a 20 gig player that costs 349 but holds up to 13000 tracks (about 3000 more than the 40 gig Ipod). I don't know much about mp3 players so my question should I keep this one or reutrn it for something else?

ipod is definitely NOT the best if you use a PC. If you use a mac, sure, the ipod is great.... But the iTunes software is VERY buggy on the PC. Seriously, I wouldn't be surprised if Apple engineers made it "slightly frustrating" on the PC, intentionally.

Hehehhehe. Dummy. What part of your brain says that equation works?

You paid more than an Ipod for a Sony product? Haven't you ever heard of the Playstation 2?

Probably this one from Sony's website about the product here I'll highlight it for you:

If your battery dies, so does your music. That's why Sony developed the NW-HD1 Hard Drive Digital Music Player. It features up to 30 hours playback with built-in rechargeable lithium-ion battery1. The other guy only gives you 12 hours, and that's not cool. But what about capacity? The NW-HD1 can store up to 13,000 tracks2 at 48kbps when using Sony's ATRAC3plus™ audio format.

Also see up to how long you can listen to it without having to recharge?

I have a Dell DJ 15GB and I love it

I was on the same boat as you but I listed the pros & cons of each

The Dell DJ won because of better battery life + space for the money
