I'm finally getting an ipod.. black 80gb video.

I want to start copying all my CD's to HDD to load on the ipod.

Is iTunes the best way to do this? I hate itunes, honestly.

What is the best way to accomplish?

There's no reason to hate iTunes - it's a bit big, but it's easy to use and free - what more can you ask for.
Pick your own encoding rate (if you're not sure then just leave them as the defaults) - personally I use 128k AAC. Then encode all your CDs DRM free!!!! Make sure you leave a week free for this bit as it's v tedious

Even though not many seem to like it, I don't think you can beat iTunes.

Install it, and load all of your music into the iTunes library, so all you need to do is drag and drop your music to your Ipod when you get it.

uses EAC (by far the best cd ripper) and when coupled with LAME creates the highest quality rips.

it's not free, but well worth the money.

if you dont want to spend money, and don't want to use iTunes, then EAC is free and so is LAME/RazorLAME.
