So it looks like this thing really is coming. It might be tough for Apple to negotiate with cell phone providers. Negotiations were tough between Cingular and Apple when the ROKR came out, and the end result was a bullshit 100 song limit (regardless of how much memory the phone had).

All these phone companies are trying to promote their own music stores. Providing an iPhone is basically promoting iTunes, which would be a conflict of interests.

Maybe Apple will come out with their own mobile service, like Myspace's Helio?

    :ugh:

I love apple, but I really doubt they could do a better job than the companies which have years of practice. ROKR was a flop, and I really really doubt a success with an iphone unless it has very capable pda features.

:noes: And I was all set to go get a new Nokia this week. I think I'll wait to see if it actually happens and then I'll switch.

If this "inside info" is legit, then its still gonna be a while before the iPhone sees the light of day; it still has to get FCC approval. And then after that, negotiations still have to be made with cell phone providers (or Apple has to start up their own network).

no wonder people call apple users sackriders... i mean i love apple as much as everyone else, i even work for them... but saying that youre going to buy a product before ANY information at all is released regardless of what that information is sounds sackriderish to me :hs:

MySpace doesn't have a cell service. Helio is an MVNO of Sprint, IIRC. They lease air space and bandwidth from Sprint and resell it with features like MySpace mobile and shit.

Although I am a diehard Apple fan and supporter, I don't think I would buy a phone from Apple at this point unless it could rival the features AND pricing of my SideKick 3 (including data plan...$20 unlimited data and SMS FTMFW). They are too new to the market to offer a super killer phone...unless it had:

    - ~2 MP camera
    - GSM Quadband Service
    - Symbian (or better? Custom Apple interface FTW) OS
    - iTunes with FW connectivity and no limit song player
    - HD?
    - Ability to use 3.5mm headphones

Maybe other shit. What do you guys think it needs?

Good call. That's the word I was looking for the whole time...MVNO.

MVNO seems like a better solution for Apple than negotiating with networks. This way they'll have complete control of the user experience (hardware, software, service)....just like what they've done with the iPod, iTunes and iTMS.

Hell, if Apple had their own MVNO, they could integrate the iPhone with Mail.app and iCal. :eek3d:

:werd: even though I'm sure it'll be a quality product, I'm going to try it before I pay the ridiculous amount Apple is going to ask.

I'm somewhat hoping they do something like sony ericsson where they sell their own phones and allows major providers to sell a few of the phones (i.e. the w300, z520a and soon to be the w810i via cingular).

As for why those of us who say we will buy one say it without having seen it...I know I feel the same because I trust that Steve wouldn't let it out in the wild as an Apple branded product (as opposed to the Motorola branded ROKR) unless it didn't suck.

...but I'll still wait til all the early adopters have had a chance to report back as I'm paranoid now from the whining idle CPU experience from my day one MBP (resolved with a new logic board, but still drove me batty for a couple of months before-hand).
