simple question, given the choice between these 2 boards which would you take? why?

I downloaded the last free version of Invision board from them before they began charging for it so I have them both (phpbb is obviously free)

I see there are lots of hacks and crap for phpbb but some of it can be time consuming. and many of the hacks from what I think are included with Invision.

One thing I am interested in will be changing the default skin of either of them to something more suitable to me and easy to do. and a decent admin cp

    so Invision or phpbb??

Don't support a company that pulled the crap that IPB did. If you're going to pay for a bulletin board, you may as well get the top dog and pay for vBulletin. As far as phpBB goes, they're free, but it's still phpBB. So ick.

IPB is very nice, imho, but pulling the free>paid thing is dirty dirty.

I remember using invision board a lot... but stepped out of the forum scene for a bit. When did they start charging? I agree it is pretty shitty. They even put stupid limits on it (200 users, 5000 posts, etc).

IPB is terrible now. I'de say phpBB is awesome, free, and given the right knowledge of php and mysql and some plugin scripts, it can be just as powerful as vbulletin... however, if you want to pay for one, go with VB... I think OT alone has proven its stability :mamoru:

Most of us in the Bulletin Board "industry" were pissed off at the 180 pulled by IPS, but not shocked in any way. Matt was clear for years that he wanted to turn a profit on his fame. So when he turned his back on those who helped him get where he is now, all we could do was sit back and say "Told ya".
