I just bought an internal hard drive enclosure, along with an internal hard drive. They are compatible with each other, and everything was connected and installed properly. However, the problem was that my computer (2005 Dell Latitude D610 with XP) recognized the disk as being connected, did not assign it a drive letter and also was unable to format it. I have one other external, if that matters to anything.

My questions: Is the jumper setting supposed to be on Master or Slave?
How is it that the computer recognizes the plug-n-play hard disk but doesn't assign it a drive letter or anything of the sort?
    Am i doing something wrong?

I dont think the jumper settings matter as long as its only a single drive enclosure but you should be able to give it a drive letter through Control Panel>Admin Tools>Computer Management>Disk Management.

What he said, and it should be a master if it's the only one in the enclosure.

It should have assigned a drive letter. If it did not, you can do so in disk management.

Well sata drives don't have jumper settings, so I'm assuming
the drive is plugged into an ide cable.

In which case, the drive's jumper setting should be to either
    cable select (cs), or slave.
