    Has anyone heard of/tried "intermittent fasting" as a cutting technique? It basically involves cycling on and off caloric intake every other day. I've read that if you eat 2x calories every other day you'll have similar weight change (no change if you're eating maintnence level) with some added health benefits.

    It sounded strange to me, but I haven't heard of anyone using it along with reducing caloric intake as a cutting method.

    Anyone?

    Hell if I know but it might make sense in a hunter/gatherer evolutionary context where meals came intermittently and inconsistently.

    It sounds like you still need to eat less to cut, I don't see anything about reduced body fat anywhere in this article.

    Right. It's probably easier to reduce caloric intake when you're eating 2x as many calories in one day - you'll be able to eat less naturally, I'd assume. :dunno:

    Check out this blog post by some doctor:

    People are posting in the comments (and in the story itself) that there is actually an increase in energy when people tried eating only 1 big meal a day. Strange...

    This pretty much flies in the face of everything I'd read at sites like WBB, etc - which suggest eating many small meals.

    can you really compare mice to humans that closely as far as eating and nutrition go? don't mice have a crazy fast metabolism as compared to us?

    Mice != people

    That said, the Eades at proteinpower.com have done some testing of IF, and Shaf from Power and Bulk has too.

    my mom used to use some diet called the rotation diet, and it worked for her to lose weight. you would cycle through 800, 1200, and 1600 calories. the idea was that it actually takes 2-3 days for your body to enter starvation mode, so as long as you ate maintainence every 3rd day your body wouldn't go into starvation mode but would continue to burn the normal amount of calories each day. i'm not sure how well this would work if you're trying to build/maintain muscle though, she was more concerned with getting rid of the pounds she gained with 4 kids :o but she did swim a mile 4-5 times a week for excercise as well.
