The wife & I spent the day visiting our daughter and her family. Our son-in-law and I ran an errand to Walmart and, as has become my custom, I went through the sporting goods dept to check ammo.
As I stood in front of the ammo case, which contained some shotgun shells & nothing else, the guy at the counter asked "May I help you?".
I replied that, from looking in the case, no.
He inquired as to what calibers I wanted and I told him 9mm and 22lr.
He disappeared in the back and came out with 5 boxes of Federal 9mm ($9 each) and said they were out of 22.
When I asked why they weren't in the case he proceeded to tell me a story.
It seems that within the last week a group of "young gentlemen" smashed the glass on the case, grabbed boxes of ammo, and ran like hell for the front door. They weren't as fast as the clerk's radio and security blocked the doors. They then ran around in the store slamming into customers and pulling stuff off of the shelves, in an attempt to get away, until finally apprehended.
The manager decided that all popular calibers will now be stored in the back.
I don't know if other Walmarts will do this too now but the moral of the story is "Ask.".
I'm now ahead another 250 rounds.

I also feel your story is false due to the fact that there would be no ammo for said "young gentleman" to steal in popular calibers

My walmart has the bulk 100 shell 12 guage on the shelves but most of the 25 packs, buck shot and slugs are behind the glass. This includes the low and high base 6's as well as the high base 4's and 5's

    dpixel8,
I really don't give a shit whether you believe me or not. I thought I'd share an interesting story and alert folks to the possibility that it's worth asking.

WI is a pretty pussified anti-gun state. Maybe it's a new thing recently (haven't even thought to look in the past month) :dunno:

wal marts in my area have some of the shotty ammo locked up but the 7 1/2 shot they have on the shelf.

and i'm starting to see some ammo in stock more often lately in the last 2 weeks, might just be a lucky streak though

The wal-marts here have most of the shotgun shells on the shelf. Yesterday was the first time I've seen anything other than shells, .223 or 30-06...But alas, it was a single WWB of 44 mag.

I had to cave in and by 9mm Blazer from one of the gunshops here for $14/box...but I had to have some before my CC class Sunday and I don't think I'm going to see any at Wally World soon.

Me either, but if the case would be otherwise empty, they may have stuck some shells in there to make it look like they have a purpose for the case :dunno: Retail managers/merchandisers are weird like that.

Our local wal-mart's ammo case glass has been broken (brand new too, they just put that case in). Not sure on the story behind it though.
