I'd like to get a mac but I think I should probably wait until the new ones come out.

Do you think they'll be any less expensive since they're Intel?

    And is it worth waiting?

Do you think the pricing for the current Macs will go down once the new ones come out?

To clear inventory? Possibly. I can see some consumer confusion happening if they do that.

Intel's high end chips cost just as much, if not more then their PowerPC970fx counterparts. So I doubt they will be much cheaper.

Actually, Apple should be getting a huge discount from Intel on their parts. Intel gives integrators huge discounts on parts if they go exclusively Intel. Dell is a perfect example - by using only Intel chips they get huge discounts and access to other components such as StrongARM processors for next to nothing.

I've put off getting an iBook or Powerbook for over two years, the processing speed just isn't acceptable to me. I'll be first in line to try/purchase a mactel pb.

the minute you buy a machine, something new comes out. but if you waited until that something new comes out, you get it, love it, then something newer comes out. another reason to love apple so much is because their machines can stay current much longer than their windows counterparts.

I know they hold their value a lot better than pc's but I don't know about "staying current."

I'm personally waiting for the Intel Macs. Everyone says that Apple will be supporting PPC for many years down the road, but we all know that isn't true. Look what happened when Apple switched from 68x00 -> PPC, and then again from OS9 to OS X. Those with the older tech are always screwed.

Not to mention that I bet that there will be a ton of new apps that will now be ported to x86 OS X that people simply won't bother to bring to PPC OS X.

My powerbook is almost 6 years old and its running Tiger. I don't know of many pc's that can do that still, and run 1gb of ram as well.

Yeah, I don't think a six year-old pc could run tiger, or even a new one. You got me there.

Is it going to be possible to install a Mac OS on a Dell without modification?

Most likely not. I highly doubt Apple is going to completely give up any holdings it has in hardware to focus entirely on its software, so they're going to have to make some way to ensure it stays on Apple hardware.

Unless Apple drastically reverses course, you can bet they're going to do everything in their power to prevent that.

Is there an expected release date for the new ones?
I don't want to wait anymore.

not to get into a flame war, but do you know how programs are written? most apps written these days are written in a way that they can be compiled for any architecture.
