    Instructions

The steps are listed about half way down.

These are the directions someone posted with the corrections from another poster.

You should make a partition around 650MB(make sure it is enough to hold the contents of the XP CD) and format is using fat32. If you use NTFS you won't be able to access the partition using a standard dos boot disk.

When in the XP install you can partiton like normal. But leave the fat32 partiton that contains the install files alone.

Thanks, 2 questions though. I konw the harddrive isn't formatted right. How do I format it and make it bootable? Also, how do I run the Win98 DOS program "smartdrv.exe?"

I edited my previous post while you were responding.

fdisk and format or if you are in XP now with the slave attached use XP disk management

Boot disk download. Get the essentials one at the bottom. It should have smartdrv.exe on it.

The thing is, the reason I want to install Windows off the harddrive is because I don't have a working CD or floppy drive on it. How else could I use smartdrv.exe? I have a 256mb usb memory stick, but I don't think the computer supports booting USB devices.

Edit: the boot disk link doesn't work btw.

When you format the drive you can use the /s switch to make it bootable. It has been a long time since I have done this but I believe it will work.

    format e: /s

Also you can find smartdrv.exe on google. Link

In fdisk set the partition with the XP CD files as active. Then disconnect all other hard drives and set the drive that will have XP on it as IDE master. The next time you turn your computer on it should boot to the hard drive.

I forgot the mention, the /s switch in format copies over system files. These are the files that will give you a dos prompt.
