Installed Redhat on a spare drive and it booted into that fine, when I wanted to boot into Windows, GRUB showed up, I clicked on DOS and it said Disk I/O error.

My HP is one of those that have a recovery partition as the first and active partition. I went to fdisk and made the other partiion the active one, still got the disk I/O error. So I had to do /fixmbr or whatever (don't remember exactly) and then recovered Windows....

is there a tested workaround for this? help!

yea, sounds like GRUB is confused about where to find your windows partition. I would re-install Fedora and make sure it picks the right partition.
