i just got this new s-video cable for my old piece of crap sony hi 8, i was wondering why when i open my editing program to capture the images it is not recognizing the camera, i've plugged everything in through my ati radeon 9600 xt video card like it instructs you too in the video card manual, but my comp is not recognizing it, i am using pinnacle studio 10 and 8, tried both, my help would be appreciated, thanks.

Is the S-Video on the card out or in?

You need it to be S-Video in.

How old is the camcorder? Does it have USB or Firewire connections?

svideo is just video, no program will be able to id it as a camera. it will show up probably as ati campture device, and you need to record it realtime
