Really, seriously, considering purchasing a Civic EX in the next few weeks, it's a little more fun to drive than my truck but definitly short on the power. I don't want to get the Si because my insurance would be ~200-250 higher per term in addition to the higher loan payments and if I'm going into that price bracket I'd rather spring for a new Miata w/hardtop.

Anyway are there any cheap aftermarket upgrades for the base engine that would add more hp/tq without robbing fuel economy or voiding the factory warrantee?

Short answer: no, not really. The 1.8 was not meant to be tuned.

Like any car, you might get 5 or 10 hp from well-chosen i/h/e. But that isn't exactly cheap.

  4. I have an Si and I thought about doing those mods to it but I never thought I would get a noticeable difference :dunno: am I wrong?

cheap and fast dont mix. If you want to be fast your going to need to invest some money into the engine. Really the only way to get decent numbers with out forking over too much is nitrous but to alot of people that is a taboo word ...

really the SI would be perfect perf/economy mix for me, 200hp is enough (as gay as that sounds) but I can't stand the thought of paying Geico more money simply because of the stereotype attached to people in my demographic that buy this particular Civic.

The only way to get more power out of any engine is to get more air into it so you can add more fuel. (disregard, for the moment, efficiency-enhancing mods like shaving the crankshaft and whatnot.) A tube+cone intake might help a bit if your stock intake resembles intestines like the one on my friend's Tiburon did, but beyond that you're going to have to use forced-induction, possibly including a standalone fuel-management system to handle the extra fuel demand -- and I'm guessing that doesn't fit your definition of "inexpensive".

I think the R series motors have an exhaust manifold built into the head. Just buy the 4 door Si, and pay the extra money. You won't get any performance out of the EX.

Or you could just do suspension on the EX. No extra power, but it would drive nicely. Just my $.02

For serious, I have to conclude that if you buy a new Civic EX, in a few months you'll wish you had not compromised and had bought a car you really like.

    Been there.

they (AJP motorsport) has already got a turbo kit for the civic si that put down 500+hp to the wheel.
