Well lately 5.45 seems to be alot more available then 7.62 and sometimes cheaper.
Accuracy is pretty good out to 400m.
    Mags are real cheap
Both my SAR2 and WASR2 have been quite reliable only problems I can ever recall having were all mag or ammo related.
I would go with a nice arsenal with threaded barrel and triangle folder but I think he lives in cali so not for him.

And link to a good rifle? we were looking at the arsenals but they were out of production...

the specific list of what is illegal, IF there is a detach mag (what he would probably run):

    Pistol Grip
    Thumbhole stock
    Collapsing/folding stock
    Forward pistol grip
    flash supressor

So basically, the regular AK pattern is fine as long as the pistol grip is removed first. (thats what I will be doing with my Romy G)

In that case I would just get a SAIGA, VEPR, or Norinco Hunter if you can find one.

SAIGAs have their own legal issues to deal with :o

and a standard AK patter would be better, because then when we go shooting outside of CA, he could just reattach the pistol grip.

:o i'd like to get one with wood furnature, fixed stock and a threaded barrel.

i don't really care about caliber, whatever is cheaper would be nice (especially on a college budget). i dont really know the difference between wasr-2, wasr-10 or anything like that.

    can someone educate me? :o

edit: OH FUCK this is hossb7 on panzer's laptop

    Wasr 10 = 7.62x39
    Wasr 2 = 5.45x39

WASR is as cheap as it's going to get, AIM has/had WASR2's for $290, 5.45, I think they are making no ban ones now with threads and lugs, ammo is currently going for about $140 per case.
Romanian is the only cheap route with 5.45 rifles the others are all @ $500+

SAIGAs are banned by name, IIRC, or some such California pussy legislator legalese. However, putting a SAIGA stock on a WASR-2/other AK variant should be legal, if I read correctly.

Since you can't have the p grip anyway I'd leave it as is.

Sporter stock + detachable mag = win, to me.. I don't know about you. What does a cali legal detach mag AK look like with no butthole stock and no pistol grip?

I was just playing with my SAR it would have horrible ergo's if you took the grip off your better off with something sporterized. If you ever move to a free stay you can always convert them.

Pics? most people I have talked to dont really have a problem without the PG. There is also a PG replacement that makes it into a more traditional grip angle.
