    need some opinions.

Will be mostly a range toy.. (minimum 100yd) and occasional deer hunting. I'd eventually like to go prairie dogging, but being in Florida its a bit of a trip. :o
Long distance shooting is a big interest to me.

I'm pretty sure .308 will be the best bet.. But .30-06 might be as well?

I'm looking at the Remington 700 SPS Varmint Tactical.

Any other rifles I should look at? The synth stock + shorter barrel are the main things that interest me.

    Why? More "Inherent accuracy?"

223, or 223AI (twisted faster than 1:9) if you reload.

100 yds can be done with a 22lr (and would be a lot more fun IMO).

A 223 is cheaper to shoot, and will do fine out to ranges further than it sounds you will be shooting. Use the heavies for paper, and the Vmax if you want to see some red mist.

I wouldn't want to use anything smaller than a .243 for deer.

    .270 would be ideal

    100gr for varmit
    150gr for deer

I didn't notice the deer comment before..

But I'll still stand with the .223 and add the 53gr TSX into the forray.

    6mm (85gr X, 105AMAX) via 243 (or 243AI) certainly ain't no slouch though.

whos that guy that sackrides the shit out of the LTR?

if it's gonna be for bench shooting, get a regular rem 700P in .308

if you want to take it hunting get the LTR

I'm not comfortable using the bare minimum for deer hunting. (legal standpoint in Fl)

I think I've narrowed it down to Tikka T3 Light (stainless or black. :run:) and 700 SPS Varmint Tactical.

Both in .308 (.30-06 characteristics, but shorter action) <--- Am I accurate in that thought?

    Tikka T3 Lite in .308.

Super accurate, smooth as glass and they can be had for under $550. I love mine.

Remington anyday and 5 times on Sunday.

And stop fretting the headstamp, and worry about the bullet you are shooting. Headstamp doesn't mean shit.

I've got it in black. Mainly because I didn't really want a stainless hunting rifle (for stealth purposes).

    *sigh*
Neither one of you are very bright, are you?

Headstamp meaning Cartridge Headstamp, meaning caliber marked on shell casing.

    Try again.

If someone is building a purpose specific gun, and handloading... sure. He won't be saving much money going .223 if he's dropping $1.50/per to get the few commercial loadings of TSX. Recommending AI chamberings to someone unsure about 308 vs .30-06? Come on dude.

if its just for range fun, i'd get it in .223

  23. The discussion at the time he made that statement was solely related to caliber. It would be reasonable to assume, in that case, that he was referring to that which was being discussed, rather than something totally irrelevant to the discussion. We all know that the headstamp contains caliber and manufacturer information, and pretending like he was talking about anything other than caliber is disingenuous at best. Rather than nit-pick stupid things just for the sake of being a pain in the ass, we should return to intelligent discussion where we all understand that we can make statements without worrying about someone "lawyering" us to death.
