for under $750 I'd say hp SE or gateway m-series. for under $1200 I'd say lenovo T61p.

You can get a nice DELL Inspiron laptop for under $2000. You can get what you want and way more for that. Dig around the internet for some coupon codes.

i have an Inspiron 1520 that i bought as a refurb through Dell (it was the only way to get a 1520 with discrete graphics) and while i think it is fine for the $850 or so i paid for it (i can't remember exactly how much, but it was under $1k), it certainly has its drawbacks. for example, while it is the exact specs on paper of a MacBook Pro that costs $2000 (not the latest one, the one that was current when i bought it, 2.2Ghz c2d proc and the rest), it performs much worse. i compared the 3Dmark test to someone else who was running Vista on their mac.

the other issue is that it is a pretty thick laptop. if i'm spending over $1k, i'd definitely look at the XPS laptops if i was sticking with Dell. current ones have the discrete graphics, they are thinner and lighter and are most likely faster even with the same processor, memory, hard drive specs.

depends on what the op wants.

the t61p comes with an Nvidia Quadro, optimized for CAD and other 3D apps.
if he use those apps, its worth it.

for gaming,... even if he install Geforce drivers, it will still run like shit.

for normal stuff like email, web surfing, etc... the Quadro is practically useless.
all it will do is drain the battery faster and makes the laptop hotter.

vista uses the gpu, heavily. in my experience the current gma offerings are better than they were a year or two ago... but they still suck floppy donkey dick.

Yes, even normal windows usage benefits from discrete graphics.

would be nice if the sofa king could give some more details about what exactly he's looking for. you could meet all of his requirements for under $1000. what exactly are you going to use it for? are you going to be trying to play games? if so, discrete graphics are a necessity. are you going to be carrying this everywhere you go? if so, you probably want a lighter and thinner laptop.

With a 9cell batt it will last for several hours.

plus hd content is gonna need a discrete card.

people that say turn-off the eye candy are retarded. the eye candy is the only thing that makes windows bearable to use.
