i've wanted to purchase the Canon 20D for some time now and in looking at this camera and the Rebel XT, i don't really see a difference in the image quality. i'd end up saving about $500.00 by purchasing the Rebel XT as well.

a little background: i've always enjoyed photography as a hobby and begin a photography program next fall. my goal is an associate's degree at this point, but depending on how much i enjoy it will be the deciding factor on me pursuing a bachelor's degree. at the point of graduation i'll be upgrading my camera either way so would it be financially smarter to just go with the Rebel XT right now since i will be upgrading in about two years?

a side note: i've only ever used Canon cameras and feel most comfortable with them, hence my decision being a Canon.

any help will be greatly appreciated! :x:

20D is a better camera, but can you justify spending 500 more when you can spend those 500 for a better glass which matters more then differences in these 2 bodies.

I refuse to help you because the black font is hard to read in Darkness.

a friend of mine has one that i've used several times and it's a lovely camera, but i will be spending just as much on glass as i will on the camera. besides, i have very small hands and the Rebel XT feels more secure when i hold it.

it seems so. i just hope it does everything i need it to for school. that's really my main concern. it's so hard to prepare for something you know very little about. reading reviews on classes and products can only get you so far. :hs:

I like rebel XT better as well. I have good sized hands but it stills feels better then 20D

    I chose XT btw.

You wont notice the difference between them in most cases.

sorry but i have to disagree. while the xt is an amazing camera, i truly felt as though the 20d felt much better. but the op already knows this and so i guess that there's not much to really say except for do you want to spend the extra $500. in my case it was an extra $200...:noes:

    OK, now we're talking.
350D and 20D offer basically the same image quality, wih the 20D having (supposedly), a tiny bit better high-ISO performance, though it's said that the difference is nearly-negligible.
It is more rugger than the 350D though, and shoots much faster (5 fps vs. 350D's 3 (or rather 2.8) fps). It also offers the rear dial.
Basically, if those features are worth $500 to you, then go for the bigger brother, but if not, youngin' will suffice. I know it from experenice. I love the little ones.
That being said, the 350D really is small, almost too small for my hands (I'm a big guy), but I manage and don't really have a problem with holding it. Other do though, so the optional battery grip might be a good thing to buy. Same thing goes for the 20D though.
As others said, it'd probably be best to spend those $500 on some good glass instead. Like, Sigma glass.

XT with a battery grip handles quite well, especially if you are just getting into digital SLR photography. I am quite happy with mine, and as a bonus - the lenses will fit a 20D if you choose to upgrade.

I chose the XT because to me the differences wern't enough to justify the price difference. My brother has the 20d. I think it's a great camera. I really like how much lighter the XT is though. I am not even close to him in quality of photographer but I do like having the control over the camera that a SLR gives. before this the last SLR i had was a Canon F1. If I get into photography as much as him I think I could justify the cost of the better cameras, but the XT is still a great camera for what I want it to do. :dunno:

The only real main differences is the 5fps (20D) to 3fps(XT) speeds and the 20D's 1/8000 shutter speed, compared to the XT's 1/4000. I don't really see me shooting a great deal of multiple fps's or the need of a 1/8000 shutter so I got an XT. If I ever get better or make some money with my camera I will upgrade to a body that will suite my needs. Either way, if I get good EF lenses they will work on the high end of Canon DSLR's.

    so i went with the 20d :o

i just couldn't bring myself to actually purchase the XT when i know the 20d will give me more options and is a better camera overall.

thanks for everyone's help, though! :)
