I'm thinking about getting this LCD TV for my family for Christmas...

    decent tv, especially for 1080p..

you could get a better tv, with higher hz, in 720p for less though.

are you sitting less than 5 feet from the tv or what?

Probably more like 7-10 feet, though I imagine my brother will camp out about 2" away from the screen when he's playing Mario Kart. (Actually, it's going on the wall so he can't do that anymore.)

Mostly I want 1080 because that's going to be the gold standard for television for...probably as long as 480 was, so that means this TV won't need to be replaced until it actually dies of old age. Our previous living room TV was a Mitsubishi cabinet box from 1984, and while I doubt any existing LCD can run for 24 years without needing replacement, even if it only lasts 10 years it works out to $90 a year. That's not too bad.

$900? Best buy is selling a 40" Samsung for another $100 I believe. You'd be better off with that. (this is Canada, I'm sure you have far better deals)

Too late, I ordered already. However, this unit also came with free shipping, which shaved off another $150 on top of the $130 discount. $280 still in the pocket ain't bad.
