stupid thing has been close to overheating recently (coolant temp gauge going into the red), ended up taking a look at the coolant reservoir and it was completely empty. added water to the reservoir tank up to the full level but coolant temps still don't seem to be completely stable.

question a. do you refill coolant the way i did or pour it into the radiator until the reservoir gets a reading?

question b. if coolant levels are fine...what do i look into next to be causing the problem (and hope that it's not the head gasket..)

    thanks for any help.

...if you didnt immediately think to check the thermostat next, maybe you should just take it to the shop

    have you checked it since.

you can add through the coolant bottle, and it will be drawn in.... meaning you may need to check it again and add more.

give us some more info on the overheating. its it at low speed or high speed?

low speed = likely fan clutch

high speed = radiator is likely crudded up

filled up the bottle on a completely cold engine. afterwards, we made a trip to the local grocery store (~5 min trip). temps seemed to be fine at this point, checked the bottle when we got there and it was still at the full line.

on the drive home decided to turn on the AC to see if it made any difference to temps. things seemed to be fine except the very last leg of the trip right when we pulled into our parking spot (right after a pretty generous hill climb), when the temp gauge was reading pretty close to the red again. check the coolant level again at this point, and it was still at the full line.

live in the city so all driving is around 30 mph or so. owned the 4runner for 3 months now :hs: and it has 129,xxx miles on it. has the 3.4l v6, and from some google searching have found this can be signs of a (what seems to be common) head gasket going out.

pretty broke college student at the moment so taking it to the shop isn't much of an option.

    thanks for the help
