just built an intel e2200 machine. loaded leo4allv2 onto it

it grabs my mpgs of tivo programs off of my server and runs them through visualhub. depending on the recording quality, i usually can cut the file size in half by converting it to an avi. all of them have horrible interlacing, so i have visualhub de-interlace it for me

works well, i don't have to give up my macbook for days on end to convert 400gb worth of mpgs.

2 problems though - my nic will only do 100mbps, even though it is gigabit, so transfer speeds are a little slow. occassionally the network will drop if there is no activity for a long time, but pulling the plug fixes it

also, stuck with 1024x768. however i'm only using this for one program, so no big deal

    yeah, i know, illegal

How does it "grab stuff off your server"? I'd like to hear more on that.

I have an old Windows desktop I built for ripped dvd encoding. I rip it on my powerbook and copy it over. It's been encoding video almost constantly for almost a month now. I wish I could get it to run as a hackintosh, but XP works fine with Handbrake.

thats just my stupid way of saying that i take the files off of the server's shared folder and drop them into visualhub
i wonder if you could do something in automator with visualhub

    .
visualhub is a fancy, expensive, front end to ffmpeg, that is immensely easy to find better front ends for on windows that use better compression than an avi (h.264 in an MP4 is best, probably will save you half over again from AVI). that being said, if you have the guts to do a hackintosh, you probably know all this already :o

yeah, i was thinking about other formats, but i need something standard. i don't think my modded xbox will play mp4s

so far so good. i just rebooted it yesterday to give it a break for a little while, while i moved around stuff on the server. upon reboot, my gigabit ethernet works now, so i can transfer over files much much faster.
