Anyone else into it? Any advice you can dispatch re Kit, brands to buy/steer clear of etc? I'm currently lending a Canon 400D DSLR with 18-55mm lens. How much would you be talking to buy this? (Camera base, lens, 2 batteries, charger and memory card.)

    1. Ask yourself how serious of a Hobby you want this to be and then set a budget for your initial gear.

Remember you can always get used stuff, it doesn't have to be brand new.

If you are serious about it then set a budget of around 1K. If mildly serious, then you should be good to do with $700 w/ used gear.

    2. Keep your gear simple - 1 DSLR (Xti/Xsi or 30/40D or something equivalent in other manufacturers)

One Lens, preferable something with Constant Aperture (Tamron 17-50 2.8).

    One flash

If you have some cash left over, get Prime lens (50 1.8 or something).

    3. Don't buy anything else for the next year...use what you have to get what what you want.

Upgrade your gear only when you find the limitation of your gear holding back your creativity.

i started with a d60, 18-55 and 55-200 kit. used it for about 5 months, sold my kit lenses and picked up an 18-200. best piece of advice i could give you is to buy a body and a similar lens. take tons of pics, fool around with post processing and learn.
