I'm getting back into the web programming field and would like to have some portfolio pieces. I'm separating from the Military and havent done any actual "work" just freelance shit on my own that wont really work as sample work.

I'll work for free if I must on samples for your portfolio as well. I am gonna make up some of my own sites n such as samples of my work but having others design and make the images would be ideal. I'm a coder, not a designer.

I can do HTML, CSS, JavaScript quite easily, pretty much by hand, :o

http://www.roblesrolo.com - site i made ages ago when i was actually working on the sites in the sections ... its sliced by Imageready but I can easily do it all by hand with the images if needed. disregard dead links n shit, :o

    so is this http://www.carrascojr.com.

and none of the sites that do work look anything like the screenshots that you mouse over

after seeing all the other sections ( programming, flash - all movies, and the rest ) i would give your site 1/10 for designing skills, 3/10 coding and 0/10 for usability and user friendly concepts. i am sorry but i wouldn't consider hiring you even for a email newsletter job.

in that case if you are looking for portfolio building idea here is something you might want to consider.

Find a website that is less known and short from perfect with good graphics but bad implementation or layout. Take it on as a project how you would of done it and do it. once you do this try and creat your own graphics and dummy content. At the end you will have a good sample of work both how you work with current sites and given layout(design) how you code and how you design . You will have 3 examples before / after / and with own graphics
Once you do that take on a different type of site and do the same. At the end you will have good experience and alot better portfolio than what you currently have.

Do not miss represent and lead people to believe that those were actual client projects. Explain that was just a sample work you created as own projects to build your portfolio and show your skills. If you do good enough job may be even you can contact the websites you used and let them know you have ideas regarding their site that you want to share with them. This might actualy get you even a job.

However i wouldn't advise you to do so unless your version is a huge change in positive direction.
