ive had a .22 rifle since i was little so im not dumb when it comes to being safe about guns so please dont lecture me. anyways, i dont know much about handguns. so i really dont care what brand it is as long as its not ultra-cheap. how much should i be expected to spend? (brand new of course)

You could get a Taurus PT100, they are pretty good prices and that's a .40 s/w. Why does it have to be a .40?

You could get a CZ100 .40 new for ~$300, that wouldn't be a bad buy. Springfield XD would be a better buy around $400 new. Glock is good for $500 new, then you go up to $600-700 for HK, SIG, etc.

You can also find good used deals on S&W or Glocks most commonly, for $300-400.

The 410 isn't bad, but i'd prefer a used 4006 or 4046 or something for the money instead. The 410 is the economy line, little rougher than the standard production models. S&W are mechanical and drop safeties. Trigger safeties are usually on striker fired guns like Glock or Sprinfield XD and the grip safety is pretty rare outside of 1911s.

Go with a springfield XD40. You should be able to pick one up brand new between $400-$480 depending on where you live. Check gun stores, some might have a used XD40 a little cheaper than the brand new ones.

while i have no experience with S&W semi-autos, i've heard too many bad things about them for me to even consider one. i do have limited experience with my dad's S&W .44 Mag revolver and it is top notch. i agree with you, as far as S&W goes......wheel guns good, semi-autos bad. just my .02 though.

I have a H&K USP .40 fullsize and a USP .40 Compact on the way. Before that, I sold my SIG 2340 to get the USP.

I also have a springfield 1911. Picked it up for $459 with two mags, case, and a lock.

S&W aren't good when they're new. When they get old they're just dangerous.
