...that will fit in my budget right now. Would I be best off to buy a cheapo wal-mart special such as this for like $178?

From what I gather from rimfirecentral is that I will eventually end up with the original receiver and that's about it because they're so fun/easy to mod. I can't see spending much more than this considering I won't keep it all. Thoughts on this?

and the twisty barrel looks funny. not to mention i'm not sure it would do me any good even though it does "dissipate heat"

For under $200 you could get a K98, Mosin, SKS, Enfield, or a variety of other milsurp rifles.

thats pretty cool, i think the yellowjacket and a stainless barrel combo (paint the barrel/reciever) would look pretty sweet

I vote SKS too. There hasn't been a gun store I've been to that didn't have at least one in there. If you do a little homework on them you can usually find a very specific kind that you want, too (referring to country of origin, grenade launcher, bayonette, etc.)

I bought a Ruger 10/22 for like $179 at Outdoor World and I love it. I don't have any plans to mod it because it's more than sufficient right now for plinking and it's already pretty accurate, not to mention i'd rather spend that money on extra ammo for my AR.

I've had a 10/22 for almost 10 years it seems and have never done any mods to it. I would like to, but they are just too expensive IMO. It is a fine good from the factory.

I change my vote to 10/22 from SKS. I've been researching the 10/22 and potential of it and its amazing.

Ditto. I've only been reading for a few hours and I'm hooked. Shooting sub 1" groups at 75 yards with a gun that originally costs < $200 is amazing (yeah...I realize to do that you spend 3x that at least on mods...shut up)
