I'm in need of an upgrade badly...

I wanna be able to play all of the new games coming out 100%, and my dual 2600+/9700 Pro rig just isn't cutting it. 40 fps is not acceptable.

So, I came up with this:

Chaintech 7NIL1 Motherboard (Love it, already own one, it will be used in this build):

    AMD Mobile Athlon XP 3000+:

    1GB Corsair PC3200 Dual Kit:

    160GB Samsung 7200/8MB HD:

    http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=22-152-014&depa=1

    Gigabyte X800 Pro:

    http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=14-125-135&depa=1

Zalman CNPS 3100 Copper CPU Cooler:

Turtle Beach Santa Cruz Sound Card:

All wrapped up in an Antec Aria case:

why are you getting a mobile athlon XP? I'd get a socket 939 A64 instead. Other than that it looks good.

I've already got a board, man. I don't want it to go to waste. It's the best board ever next to my Gigabyte Dual Socket A board.

I also don't want to buy a new mobo.

Besides, they will both last equally long for the money. That CPU will be hitting 3400+ speeds in no time.

I seriously would reccomend going the A64 route. Even an A64 3000+ at stock will crush that 3000+ Mobile XP. Then theres the matter of overclockage, which brings the 3000+ up to FX-55 speeds!

Trust me, you'd be much happier and better off trying to sell that board and going the A64 route.

    Thanks, I'll look into that.

I'll have a hard time leaving it behind :(.

I looked into it. An OCed 3000+ XP to 3400+ will do just fine for me.

That, and the utter lack of quality mATX 754 boards. The featuresets on them are weak, and they are mainly Via/SiS based solutions. I know the K8T800 is good, but I'd much rather have an nForce chipset.

I'm not a big fan of nV's video solutions. They eat up too much power and run hot, IMO.

The X800 runs cooler, uses less power and has better drivers. That's the reason I go ATi: The drivers are the best in the industry.

On the other hand, nV's chipset solutions are orgasmic, while ATi's aren't very good.

    Chipset countdown:

    AMD > nV > Intel > Via > SiS > ALi/ULi

uh, ATI drivers suck.... And the nV cards will last longer. Actually, ATI has some of the worst drivers I've ever seen.

That's funny. All the ATi fans I know say different, and some of them also use nV.

True, the Linux drivers suck, but what is the last Catalyst version you used?

IMO nV has shitty EOL support.

MP 2600 to mobile 3000? why even bother. Just save your cash and wait until you can really upgrade. Also, since the video card (even those SLI rigs) is often the bottleneck to framerate when the game is shader heavy, make sure not to skimp on your new one.

Depending on the overclocking ability of cpus/mobos/ram at purchase time is foolish. Always consider it as an 'added bonus' should you get a chip that overclocks well. Buy what you think you need/can afford assuming the system's running stock. I strongly recommend the A64 route, even if you go with an older 754 pin model if you must to save a few $$. Finally, clock for clock an A64 will crush any of the older K7 series chips.

That's funny. All the ATi fans I know agree. They suck. they have always sucked. That is why omegadrivers were started, because they were horrible. Nvidia has always had better drivers.

have you had any experience with ATI's chipset? the xpress 200 is being used only in one motherboard @ the moment, and is relatively new. As soon as another board is released with one that has overclocking capabilities i am definately buying one.

oo and definately dont waste money on the socket A system. My Athlon XP @ 2.65GHz doesn't keep up to most A64 systems. And the nforce2 NB isn't the best chipset for overclocking. I rarely see any past 250FSB, and that usually was accomanied by a chipset volt mod.

I concur, go nv at the moment, they've got better cards for price/value. 6800gt/ultra or 2 6600gt's in SLI, would be better than an x800.. ive got a 2600 xp-m that overclocks quite nicely, but if you've got the extra cash go 939...

I actually know a man who is the admin of another forum, and he is a CSE, and he prefers ATi's drivers over nVidia's, and he also knows a fair amount of developers on the Beyond3D forums, and most developers besides Epic Games and id prefer ATi, due to their superior driver support and quality.

    Let's not forget nV's 3DMark '03 cheats.

ATI has cheated too, ya know -- oh wait, you don't know... as is proven again.

Oh wait, I did know. "Brilinear" filtering, anyone?

The ban is coming man. Shape up. I don't really care that much, but the mods are closing in.

I still think nothing is nearly as lowlife as static clip planes...
