I just bought a D-Link DI-524 a few weeks ago and everything was running great until a few days ago.

Every few hours it just shuts the network down.... I lose the status, and the PC Activity light on the modem goes dead. I have to unplug the router from the power source, and unplug the Internet cable and plug it back into the router. I normally have to wait 5 minutes or so, and then plug it back in and all is fine again.

Anyone know whats wrong with this thing? Is it the cable maybe?

Is there a firmware update available?

probably overheating. Try new firmware, otherwise you may have to RMA. Is there good airflow around the unit? As a test, aim a fan right at it.
