because currently I fucking hate the gi, however most great bjj guys tell me the same thing, "I used to hate the gi but I love it now."

I'm gonna work hard to fix that part of my brain because my jiu jitsu needs to get more technical.

I will always prefer no gi, and I in the same boat jeff, I HATE collar chokes and having to constantly be on defense for some tricky collar work. but my upper body control from guard is weak right now and I need to improve my grip game and stop relying on speed and slickness to get my subs.

I will always be a no gi guy tho, but I just need to reprogram my brain a little.

I got gi choked yesterday, he opened my jacket and wrapped it over my shoulder to cross my throat. The guy that did it is about to get his brown belt and is known the be an assassin by using the gi against people. He's also 56 years old. :wtc:

this is weird, because i love the gi and i literally can't stand not gi, i just like how slow and controlled gi work has to be and find no gi very erratic and just not my style.

I love the freedom and mobility of no gi.

I feel like I'm grappling in sand with the gi on. BUT I'm sitting here with it on trying to convince myself that I don't hate it.

i think it depends on your goal.. if your goal is the typical mma cage/ring (no gi) kind of thing.. then i still think learning with a gi is a bad direction for two reasons... one a lot of gi work actually trains you to think about grabbing the gi (which when you actually fight will nto be there) and secondly.. the gi creates a much easiesr surface to hold... i think that a gi sweaty or not is NOWHERE near as slippery as you get when training no gi... so i think that training no gi in some capacity is actually harder (when talking about holding guys in control for example)

also this might be good or bad but i like the control i have with the gi on, without the gi i have less control of my opponent and it just frustrates me

I'm starting to train Gi more now to. I love nogi and it's been pretty much what I have trained since I have started.

But I want to tighten my game up and advance much further than I am. Gi is necessary for that IMO. So I'm loving the Gi, I realize what it's good for and how it's needed so I'm all about it.

once you start using the collar chokes, you will love them. you have to open your mind to this crap or you will never enjoy it. once you figure out all the cool grips and everything, and it starts working for you, its going to be awesome. start collar choking some fools. you dont know how well that basic collar choke works.

It's funny hearing you and everyone else preach about no gi like you do. To me that tells me you are fucking terrible at jiujitsu.
