so useful for everyday stuff like moving backup files into their respective folder (1 month ago, 2 months ago, etc.)

I used to be all about .bat files back when I was using Windows 3.1, but I kind of forgot about them

meh, for some reason i thought dos would support aliasing. but it doesn't seem it does, not directly at least.

DOS does support this, but not using shortcuts (which is what most people consider to be the Windows version of an alias); I believe the command is "subst".

um, windows does support aliases. Actually, it's a function of NTFS to support both symbolic links (can traverse different volumes and network shares), junction points (can link to folders or physical volumes), as well as hard links (creates pointers to "files" on the same logical volume).

That's what I was talking about, I just didn't do a very good job describing it.

I do server administration for clients and ensim webppliance is a popular application being used by many of them. And the bain of my existence is that ensim utilizes all three of those methods. Knowing what they are, how to create/remove them, and how they interact in certain circumstances is quite important.

subst just aliases drive letters, not folders.
