I love zoom lenses obviously because it enables me to not have to set up everything and I can catch shit from far away, but I know that there are always disadvantages with zoom lenses, especially with cost/aperature fitting into the project.
I love macro shots a LOT, but this would be for my personal fulfillment, I wouldn't really be looking to shoot that many crazy cool "new" pictures because lots of people do macro.

I just want an overall GREAT lens. I want to know that its going to be one of those lenses I "couldn't" live without, once i have it.

I know it will cost a pretty penny, but photography is my love/hobby...and I'm willin to invest in it.

I dont have a D80 yet, but its probably going to be a christmas present from my family. I believe it will just come with 2 kit lenses, which I've heard are alright and decent.

If you want an all in 1 lens, 18-200 VR
If you can get a few lenses, a Tamron 17-50 F/2.8, 70-200VR F2.8, 50mm 1.8. That's my combination. It's a solid combination that's fast and covers the most important range.
If I could afford it, I"d get a 12-24 & 105mm macro lens as well.

I have the D80 with the 18-70mm. It was the kit lens that came with the D70. I found it in a kit at one B&H, but that was the only place.

    I really like it.

    heres a review:

My brother has the D80 with the 18-135 f/3.5-4.5 (kit) lens. It's a pretty decent lens. I have the D70s with the 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5, 50mm f/1.8, and 70-300 f/4-5.6 (it was a gift, I prob. wouldnt have bought it). I would say get the 18-135mm and the 50mm f/1.8 to start. Once you've figured it out more, invest on better glass but those two would be good starter lenses.

the 18-200 lens is good advice (If you can find one). another really nice lens is teh 24-120. extremely sharp(VR too). It all really comes down to what you are mainly going to be shooting.

For a starter kit, and if you don't need the fast F/stop, I'd go with the new 70-300 f4.5-5.6 VR lens...rather then the 70-200 F2.8 VR.

I went broke going for the 70-200VR, but I want to be a professional! (Professional hack that is :wtc:)

I jsut grabbed a 70-300mm Sigma lense for my D80... shot a few pics with it yesterday and was pretty satisfied with the outcome for a $300CDN lense.

Here is a link to the lense I bought... http://www.sigmaphoto.com/lenses/lenses_all_details.asp?id=3303&navigator=3

I aslo have the 18-135mm kit lense that comes with the D80. I like it as well, and it covers a nice range of shooting aswell.

    If I went Nikon, I'd get 12-24, 17-55, 70-200, and 85 1.4, and 200 f2 VR
