How does OT feel about the Lite On Model SHM-165H6S?

I have read some decent reviews.. I want it mostly for making backups of DVDs...

I prefer Sony burners, myself. I've never owned a Lite-On drive, but I've read some sketchy reviews of them before.

    You arn't too bright.

Lite-On has an OEM agreement with Sony. Lite-On actually manufactures the drives FOR Sony. :mamoru:

I have never owned a Lite On either, but I have Sony and I dislike them...

I've been using Lite-On for a while. I'd either get that, or NEC 3550.

    NEC makes excellent drives.

    The Four drives I'd recommend:

    NEC / Lite-On / Sony / Plextor

The Three drive's I'd spend money on:

    NEC / Lite-On / Sony

The drives I have now are incidentally all Sony re-flashed with Lite-On firmware. For some reason, Sony drives are cheaper from my distributor.

Well the NEC doesnt have the lightscribe on it... Thats why I ruled it out... Right now it seems like a waste of money but once the media comes down for it, it seems like a really neat concept....

Do they really? Huh. Didn't see that one coming.

    Previous comment retracted.

And I'm plenty bright, I just don't work for a company that gets sent free shit all the time and I choose to not spend my days searching for/reading industry-insider info.

EDIT: I feel sorry for your subordinates. I can only imagine what it must be like to put up with your crass, narcissistic degradation in person every day.

I'd be more interested in lightscribe if it were color and didn't take longer than the actual DVD burning.

It DOES save you the trouble of buying labels or a direct-transfer CD printer, which might still require clear labels to keep the ink from picking up fingerprints, though.

I'm actually having troubles tonight. This is the second thread I saw you post something that made sense in.
Maybe it's the full moon. Maybe it's a tear in the space time continuum.
Or maybe you just got lucky.:mamoru:

As far as the drive I'd recommend, it would be the NEC.
NEC is always performs at the top of the performance envelope, and
for less money than the Sony.

I like the NEC drives, but they're always with $1 of each other on price.

I'll tell you what's wrong... you were considering buying a computer part from eBay.

    NEVER do that.

I prefer DVD+R/RW because the standard is maintained by a coalition of companies instead of a single company. In that same vein, when the next generation of DVDs go mainstream, I will be opting to use HD-DVDs instead of Blue-Rays for that very same reason.

DVD-R is signfigantly more compatible. That said, I prefer +RW when going for re-writable discs due to the featureset. However, for record-once discs, no reason not to go with -R.
