    i'm doing a self move...

I just came back from my transportation appointment..

it turns out that I'll be reimbursed whatever it would have cost the air force to move for me.

    So here's the dilemma:

the Air Force estimates that to move 800lb of my stuff it would cost them ~$1400

so if i move 800lb they will reimburse me ~$1300

here's the thing....it only cost $300-500 for me to rent a truck and move myself.

so I'll make money...but here's the kicker, if i load the truck up with 1600lb instead of 800 I'll get more money (I'll assume around $2K-3K).

so should i just load the stuff i need to move, or should i fill the truck with barbells and cement blocks?

i'm leaning towards just filling the truck up with as much as i can, you never know when you'll need...cement blocks.

CLIFFS: I'm PCSing for the first time, and want to know if it's ok to make money off of this.

edit: actually read the first post.

no you are not supposed to do that.
but if you do acquire a couple of engine blocks (buddy of mine did that) or whatever prior, go for it.

You shouldn't start your career out by cheating the AF out of money. You will get a weight limit. Find out what that weight limit is and do not go above it. Automotive parts are not to be included in the weight.

it's 10000lb, i doubt i'll even get close to that. The lady at the transport place said to bring everything i can possibly need...sorta in a hint hint wink wink way.

    any tips?

i don't own much, getting to 800lb will be hard. :hs:

and if i don't reach that, i might actually lose money.

also, when you PCS, do you get paid to do so (not reimbursement)? also will they pay me back for the hotels/meal/gas/ and other stuff i have to buy for moving?

There is a maximum they will pay you. Your choice to stay in the HoJo or the Hilton. I am not sure if you qualify for Dislocation Allowance (DLA). Mileage is standard rate. You should get a certain amount of travel days. YOU WILL NOT SAVE ANY MONEY BY REPORTING EARLY. My finance buddy told me that they get people who will try to save the AF money by coming in early or buying a cheaper plane ticket, only to find out that the AF will not let them keep the remaining amount saved.
I am not going to give you any tips on how to increase your weight, that could come back to bite me in the rear. Use that college educated brain of yours and I am sure you can come up with some creative weight management.

i'm so glad i can get the support i need from this forum...i'm going to academy and buying few hundred pound of weight for my new home gym.

i just got off the phone with penske, they are giving me a truck with unlimited miles and 8 days for ~$266.

so even if i just hit 800lbs, i'll make over $1000 bucks.

Please refer to my :uh: in the 2nd post.

To be honest, when I was his age I didn't look at the big picture or weighed potential consequences before I made decisions either.

I had a dramatic change in my attitude shortly after tech school. From then on I was about as gung-ho as you could get.

i'm not planning on doing any of those things, i'm just planning on packing a lot. putting cinder blocks and things i don't need in there is asking for trouble, i'll be making over a grand with putting just legit stuff in, i think that's enough.

i just wasn't sure if it was common to make so much money on a pcs move, thanks to this thread i know it is. And not to feel guilty about it cause it's normal.

as it is right now, it seems like the military pay is pretty good, granted if i had gone into the private sector my salary would be at least double, but all these allowances and reimbursements makes it seem like i'm rolling in money.

    I have a brilliant idea.

    1) We'll screw the gov't by cheating them out of money.
    2) We'll post about it online so that when OSI does our TS clearance there's record of us wanting to cheat the gov't.

You will make money on a DITY move, thats the point. It's ok, but don't go out and buy shit because you think you'll make more money on it. :nono:
