However, I have a weird question. If I'm only allowed one computer for each purchace, and I am building a new pc along with this purchace, does this mean I have to put EVERYTHING together before I even start installing windows xp? :ugh: I usually install back up drives, then dvd burners and pci cards last so I don't bombard the system with new hardware all at once. :-\ this sounds difficult and actually unpractical.

You can add stuff to the installation. It's when you try re-installing on a system that has completely different specs taht the copy protection will kick in.

changing out components like the motherboard, processor, or hard drive are the things that usually piss it off.

"bombarding the system" is not a problem with the install. Just make sure that you have to driver cd's ready if XP doesnt already have them, soon as you get into windows it will find the hardware and ask for the drivers. You don't have to install them right away, but its a good idea.

I try to get the minimum drivers installed, unless XP just finds them all. Get the NIC driver installed and do your windows updates. Once those are all finished install your drivers, then check windows updates again.

I do not recommend that you get any Driver updates from windows, I personally have had more bad experiences doing that than good. But, any critical updates and most of the recommended ones are good.

My advice, find a buddy that's going to college around you. With the student discounts and such, they can get copies of XP for about $10 bucks.

Wrong - it is legit for someone going to college to own. He is suggesting to find someone that can legally purchase an academic version for him - thus being illegal when it makes it into the hands of a non-student.

I am a CIS student and can get Win XP Pro for free but once I leave school I have to uninstall it otherwise it is just as good as any other downloaded copy because it is illegal.

Don't worry about bombarding the system or any other nonsense. Just install everything you want, install XP, then go in and install the drivers.

I always do drivers in the following order:

    1) MB Chipset/onboard features
    2) NIC (if not previously included in 1)
    3) Video
    4) Sound
    5) Everything else (depending on add-on's)

Don't worry about putting all the parts in at once (personally I think this is a better idea anyway, less fiddling with the hardware). Also, if you are buying all this hardware at once, you can probably get an OEM copy of XP pro a helluva lot cheaper than full retail. Check with the sites you are buying from to see if they sell it. It usually runs around $140 or so.
