what are your goals? experience? lenses? DETAILS

I would opt for the D50 over the D40, personally, because you can use more lenses with the D50 and I like the way the D50's body feels vs/ the D40/D40x

I think the kit you're looking at there will satisfy you for a while. but eventually, you're going to want to replace EVERYTHING - the body and all the glass. You have to start somewhere though and that's not a bad way to start out, IMO

With the D50, though, you can use lenses that don't have autofocus motors built into them. This includes a number of cheap but awesome lenses both new and old.

im not looking to start making money off of my pictures, but i would like to get into it for myself. i want to learn how to take better pictures. i realize a DSLR will not make my pictures better and that i will need to learn HOW to use it, unlike most P&S cameras.

I was in your boat last year.

I am a Nikon fan, but when I was looking at entry DSLRs, the Rebel XT faired way better than the Nikon D50, so I got that one.

Its an excellent camera, and you can upgrade the lenses.

    http://www.canon.com

I am still using the kit lenses. When I get some money, I'll invest on better glass. Most likely that I will get some telemetric lenses.

Go to your nearest Ritz Camera shop and try them. Then buy the one who like the most. I am sure people there will know more about their job than the typical clueless Best Buy/Sears/Target employee.

Good buy. I got the Rebel XT brand new but for $600.

Don't forget to buy a tripod and a CF card, oh and a jacket with lots of pockets.
