i'm soon turning 20. 20 should make me happy, but the only thing i can think of is "20 years after Chernobil". for those who know a bit about chernobil, there is a radioactive element that starts dicomposing exactly 20 years after it's been activated. for those who have been under the radioactive cloud that means that once you hit 20 things, weird things, will start happening. One of my chernobil-hit accuitances lost their sight at 20, the other got diebetis, the next one some sort of rare-rare cancer, the other couldn't walk because her veins started popping not only externally but internally - an illness that happened to extremely few chernobil kids - i already had that when i was young, so hopefulkly it won't come back, because it either goes away or makes you paralyzed. so, heh, getting to the point - i'm turning 20 and i'm shitting my pants. lol it'd be interesting to get people's feedback on this. throw any comments, any selfish or bitchy comments, any stories they heard, any friends you might have... etc.! open for discussion

Well my first thought would be to ask about your general health, ok I don't know much about this but I would have thought that there would be some indication that it could happen

Radioactive elements break down at a constant rate. There is no 20 year stall in their breaking down. And unless you were in range of the Chernobyl fallout area, in small parts of Ukraine, Belarus and Russia, then you have nothing to worry about. Many diseases manifest themselves during adolesence, and even within the zones that recieved fallout at lower levels, diseases have returned to normal rates... but still Chernobyl gets the blame.

Where are you from? If you've been okay so far, there is no reason to believe that you will suddenly become ill. If you were in the fallout zone, all you can do is have regular physicals, a couple times a year and hope for the best. Worrying won't help, ya know?

That sucks man. I hope you end up alright. Just keep thinking positively and don't let it get you down. Shit happens and if it does it's out of your hands anyway. You can still have a great life. Maybe pick up a new hobby.

Man, i don't know what to say to that. I would be a little anxious myself if I saw my friends at 20 come down with a variety of illnesses and ailments. Just keep thinking positive and taking care of yourself as best you can. Each year you are alive is a celebration

Ask your chemistry teacher. It's true it breaks down at a constant rate, but at a certain point a human body, for best example, will become more fragile as that process continues. And for one of those elements, i think Caesium, the human body responds after around 20 years. But you're right-worrying definitly doesn't help, but can't blank it out either!

i don';t live in the fallout area anymore, but on the day when the accident occured i was in the epicenter and aparently that was enough. heh it is sad taht any abnormalities taht happen with children or adults as well are blamed on Chernobyl. i had a weird scar on my head that seemed to be growing, the doctor blamed it on chernobyl and started giving me needles in my head. fuckin bastard, he was wrong! another doctor came a week into my treatment and said taht was nothing but a skin irritation. fuckin bastard, what a mentality, first thing to blame is chernobyl. not right either.

There's another Chernobyl OT'er, if I'm remembering correctly it's Spiko. Might wanna drop him a line sometime and chat with him :)

As already mentioned, if you have no obvious problems, just keep getting checked out every year. Even if something does happen down the road, make the best of things, and enjoy life. Worrying is like a rocking chair, it takes you back n forth, but you get nowhere :big grin:

I'm 20 and lived in Kiev for the first 10 years of me life. Kiev was also quite contaminated. But I don't think there is anything wrong with me.

wow, that's really strange to hear. i've only heard about chernobyl in my ap environment science class, junior year.

i'd say, don't worry about anything til something happens, neuroticism won't get you anywhere... but have you had any sort of tests run on you since, though?
