Does anyone know Illinois's policy on carrying hand guns? Spec age? I am 19 and I am wondering if I can legally transport and range shoot my fathers 9mm. I know that I can not purchase a hand gun or hand gun ammo being under the age of 21. I have looked all over but to no avail. Thanks for the help.

Probably not. They seem to have strict gun laws. YOu have to check the laws though. Go to your states website

I don't trust those websites. Go to your state statutes.

I'd recommend you move out of the People's Republic of Illinois

The state laws are kinda wierd about it but here ya go.
As long as you are transporting the firearm adhearing to legal code

Unloaded, in a case outside of arms reach, and have a valid foid card

    You're good.

I usually talk to the cops just to be sure before doing things. They're pretty nice around me and are pretty knowledgable.

The arms reach isn't applicable for illinois residents, it must be unloaded, in a completely closed case, and you with a foid card. It can in the case with the magazine on the seat next to you.

Thats probably the worst advice on here. Cops usually dont know shit. Call the state bureau of investigation instead

Carry isn't a problem I know that, but the age thing is what gets me. Unloaded, in a case, location does not matter, magzine can be loaded and inside case.

I can't legally buy ammo or purchase a hand gun, but can I carry / shoot one at the range.

I'm personally unaware of anything that would prohibit you from doing so.

    Check out 720 ILCS 5/Art. 24
    http://www.ilga.gov/legislation/ilc...eqEnd=53000000&ActName=Criminal+Code+of+1961.

if it were against illinois law I believe thats probably where you would find it.

As I said the ones by me right now, actually know what they're talking about. Not my fault that YOUR local police are dumbasses.

Call a few ranges in your area. You will get different answers, but ONE of them will know and it's usually easy to tell who knows what they are talking about and who doesn't when you ask. Plus the ranges may have their own rules anyway. For example, the range I go to does NOT allow under 21 to shoot handguns without someone over 21 with them.

You MUST also have a FOID card. Legally you can't even touch a firearm or ammo without one. Since you are under 21 you will need your parents to sign off on it too (no shit, did you know you are still a minor!)

Also, even though the law does not state that it must be out of easy reach, there are plenty of uninformed cops in Illinois that think it does. Just be aware.

Calling the ranges is a good idea, thanks. I have a foid card and I carry my rifles in the trunk.
