So I'm going to be part of Illinois crew starting in a couple weeks for the summer. Anything I should know about IL gun laws? I want to take my P99 with me, since I probably won't have much to do on weekends. Hopefully there's a range somewhere nearby. I'll be in Salem.

So, apparently I have to get a FOID card, is that correct?

Yes, you probably need to get the gun registered in IL, if it was purchased out of state.

    Also just found:

No firearm registration by state law. However, there are some cities which require registration. That is a city ordinance, not state law.
Must keep records of your firearms transactions for 10 yrs.

You don't need to register it, but you need a FOID if you become a resident of the state.

You're coming, I'm going. Welcome to the shittiest state in the union. Tennessee here I come!

    Consider yourself lucky.

As long as you don't become a resident here (Perm. address and IL drivers license) you don't need to deal with the FOID card issue.

I'm about 20 minutes from there, ranges are kind of a pain to find but I'll try to help you out!

Oh yeah theres a lot of oil fields around there. Get ready to be super bored. The best thing to happen to salem was about 5 years ago. The number of restaurants in town doubled and now you can choose between dennys or the new applebees. If you're bored the closest larger towns really are probably going to be mt vernon and centralia. Luckily St. Louis isn't far away if you want to go to a real city. On the upside there is like no crime I guess lol. Shooting is pretty hard to come by in the area because its mostly done on a good old boy's friend's property or there's a few shotgun ranges around. You'll probably find some stores won't sell you ammo with your out of state DL even though its legal.

Nah maybe some of us can do a meet up sometime and go out for a shoot even if we have to drive a little for it. Its pretty gun friendly in this part of the state. You will need to always have your gun unloaded, in a completely zipped/closed case (you can have loaded mags in the case), and either in the trunk, locked, or slide removed when you're transporting it though.

You think it's ok to to drive between TX and IL with the gun in the trunk, unloaded, yadda, yadda?

I'll probably be bored most weekends, so a little drive probably isn't a big deal.

If you're traveling with your gun unloaded in the trunk or in a locked case and the ammo seperate you are protected by federal law against any state or local laws as long as you would otherwise be legal at the start and end of your trip. In short you'll be fine.
