I tried this last night. Kind of surprised no thread yet. This is going to be the greatest dogfighting game to date. VERY realistic. I'll try to give a more thorough review when I get home but I just wanted to get the discussion going

from what I said on the IL-2 (for the PC) forums

    Just played through the demo.
This is and probably will be the closest thing you can get to a simulator on a game console.
The AI gunners are pretty brutal and on the most realistic settings, the planes will stall and spin as we are accustomed to.
It's incredibly beautiful...we can only be so lucky to have a sim half as pretty when Oleg gets done with SOW. The textures are crisp, the atmosphere is great.
The only downside is that most people will have to play with a regular controller which will take some getting used to. As usual with sims, a joystick is highly encouraged.
My main complaint is that there is zero sense of speed. Even at top speed and low, you still feel like you are going slowly.
After playing a little more, the AI is up to their usual antics of colliding with one another while chasing a wingman, or crashing into the ground after trying to do too much during a low level fight.
The fps are smooth as butter except for the minor hiccups that come when you zoom in on an area with a lot of stuff just like in FB.

Overall, I'm extremely impressed I just think that at the highest realism setting, flying smoothly and accurately with the Xbox controller is going to be impossible.

Is it better than Blazing Angels? I never liked that game much. I always did love AceCombat even though it was arcade. AC felt decent as far as controls and handling go..... What does the demo consist of? How many planes? How many missions?

3 training missions in a Spitfire, 1 Battle of Britain bomber scramble mission in a Spitfire, and 1 Battle of the Bulge ground pounding mission in a P51 with rockets over the Ardennes. The last mission especially can easily take over half an hour to complete from beginning to end on the hardest difficulty.

It's completely your opinion what is better but I believe that this is better looking and far more realistic than Blazing Angels. Realism is more appealing to me so that's my preference.

Any idea if we will be able to fly the German planes? I watched the IGN videos and IL 2 does look really good. I'll be getting the demo after work today for sure.

As soon as i heard about this i was amped for the series to come to console. Ive played it on pc before, and while the 360 sometimes chugs when the action is intense, its still awesome because after gaming on consoles for so long, i love sitting on the couch playing on a huge screen rather than hunched over a keyboard and mouse and a much smaller screen.

Played it yesterday and thought it was great. Hopefully they will optimize it a bit to cut down on the slow frame rates when there is a lot of explosions.

Might have to spring for a flight stick now. :big grin:

    This.

Any time I go to use rudder I end up completely screwing up the throttle setting.

This angers me because all they took was a Saitek X52 and put some Xbox buttons and charge more for it.
