I can't for the life of me get IIS working. If I type in http://localhost the default page shows in the browser. If I type my IP http://24.x.x.x I get "server unreachable" message? I'm running XP pro and I have cable. Is it possible the ISP is blocking it?

    TIA

your isp can't block http://localhost are you sure you have IIS running? Check that the service is started

I get a 403 Forbidden error when I connect... Check your Anonymous Access permissions.

    SLED:
the default web site is running and the IP address is "all unassigned".

    Nocera:
Anonymous access and allow iis to control password are both checked. The user name is IUSR_my_computer_name. Is this ok?

Does the directory have that user assigned with privileges?

I created a new user "friend" and now when I restart my computer "friend" appears as one of the login accounts. Why did this happen?

I then went into directory security and added "friend" as the username for anonymous access. Is it possible to give more than one user permission?

I'm not exactly sure if I'm doing things correctly, it's more like trial-and-error until it works. How do I assign users with priviledges the right way?

    thanks,

    luke

I just meant does the user name (IUSR_my_computer_name) have priveleges to the directory that holds the IIS information (ie the web page etc...). You didn't need to add another user.

Well I deleted "friend" and reactivated the default guest account - now it doesn't work. I didn't change anything except for changing the user.

5Gen, could you explain to me how to get this stuff working?

No - because you're not answering my question. Does the user that was originally created have directory access to the drive? Right click the directory in question and look at the permissions under the security tab. If the user doesn't have access to this directory, they won't be able to view the content.
