If your putting on BF% when bulking, should you tone down the calories?

    Or just go with it?

Iv been on this diet for roughly 2 months, this is my log for the preceding month. I don't log everything, so it could be slightly higher (100-200c tops).

I still need to put on size, but id prefer it not to be flabby. Strenth wise, its definetly working, im getting stronger most every week.

Im currently 152 pounds, 6'3' high.

you're gonna put on some fat when you put on muscle.

its all a personal game, play around with your calorie intake until you find a level that lets you put on a decent amount of weight while not making you feel like you're getting to flabby.

There are some things you can do.

Try implimenting a carb cutoff. Eat no carbs after a specific time, say 5:00 and eat only protein and fats after this.

Also, you can cut out some carbs on non-lifting days and replace with fat (on a g per g basis, not cal per cal). This will put you at a lower calorie intake and actually allow you to burn some fat if you do it right.

cause your body stops burning carbs at a set time everyday :ugh:

wait wait, hold on, back up the truck....you're saying replace X grams of carbs with X grams of fat to LOWER calorie intake? :ugh: :ugh:

add some cardio if you aren't doing any... and if you are, up it a little bit. or just lower the cals a bit.

What do you mean you'd prefer not to be flabby, so you mean you would prefer to be a skeleton? or do you mean you want to get perfectly defined and big all at once? Give me a break, i was like you once, in denial about my size, you're just going to have to eat and lift and expect whatever happens.

    Dude...lay off the guy.

I'm 6' and I was 135 for YEARS. I played Rugby at that weight in college.

When I hit 30...the pounds magically appeared. I am now 6' 170-175. And for the first time I got a gut.

I'm working on bulking up. But before I hit 30...it was next to impossible.

    To the original poster:
Some of us were just born skinny. And for most of us our metabolism changed with age. Realise that many people would kill to have a high metabolism like yours. Sure it makes it difficult to bulk up...but you could have the alternative and be born a fatty.

I assure you that at some point your body will hit an age and it will be much easier to put on weight. There are very few people who remain like that their entire lives.

ya, it can be. My roommate is close to 100lbs lighter than me (150 vs 240), he eats more than I do and he can't gain a fucking pound.

he isn't eating the right foods then i would guess?

like most on this board that complain, i grew up skinny as a rail, had a high metabolism, and could eat more than anyone i knew.

then i started reading F&N, followed some advice, and put on 16lbs. while i was bulking over a 6-7 month period. Not saying that I'm still not skinny by most standards or that that is a lot of weight, but its evidence that its not impossible.

Yes, I actually had a little gut from it, but its part of the game. My strength increased tremendously during the period. Now that I'm not eating like that anymore to "cut" down a bit, I'm lucky if I can maintain my strength from week to week.

Its posted on here every single day. Eat big to get big. Its the truth.

If you are skinny with a high metabolism and can't put on weight follow experienced members advice and re-evaluate your diet.

To the OP, don't be afraid to put on some pounds, its really the best way to increase your size and strength. Its a much longer process to build strength and mass on a restricted diet. Most people chose to bulk during the winter months when you can wear a sweatshirt or jacket every where so no one notices the flab. :o

Funny seeing you laughing at advice on how to lean up. :hsugh:

But year JermyD is partially wrong...replacing carbs with fat will only increase your calorie intake (1g of carbs is 4 calories, and 1g of fat is 9 calories). But I did find that limiting my carb intake to pre/post workout and to the early part of the day helped me lean up and stay lean while I am still putting on weight...cutting off carbs at a certain time also helps. I personaly only consume fats and protein after my pwo meal at 5pm.

    This topic is hilarious.

But some good advice, i think _.:AE86:._ is just trying to shock me into continuing, which is what i need, since its pretty much OT who got me into putting on lots more weight to begin with.

Im not denying i still need more pounds, but you dont need fat to grow muscle, if your still consuming well over the level of food your burning, everything is not turning into muscle growth. I just wondered if due to noticing some fat on my face/stomach, if i should rethink my diet.

I'll conclude from this topic the responce is no.
