What kind of stuff would you want to take along with you?

I only ask because my OT SS is doing just that and I don't have any military friends around to ask what kind of stuff they missed/needed while they were in basic training. Are there any restrictions on what you can and cannot bring?

I want to make his gift special cause he's a young kid and I'm sure he's going to be really homesick. Plus, I have the utmost respect for the men and women serving our country. to all of you.

He should bring nothing more than a shaving kit, an extra pair of underwear, and the clothes on his back. When he arrives, he's going to be dumping all his shit out on the ground and re-packing it as fast as he can. And he'll have to grab all his shit and run as fast as he can from one place to another. And he'll have to do pushups because he won't be able to do anything fast enough.

The only thing I can think of that would help him in Basic is a phone card. AT&T has phones at every basic training site in the US.

AT&T seems to be the company that provides services to most military bases it seems. I am not sure, but perhaps he was referring to the phone cards or maybe he did mean that they have AT&T ran phones.

buy him a small picture wallet thing. something relatively small that he can put pictures of his loved ones in. it's only a few weeks, but it seems like a lifetime. having some pics of his folks will remind him whats out there waiting when he gets done. put something motivational/ inspirational on it if you'd like

if you go this route, remember that the picture wallet thing will possibly be thrown across the room into a wall- so don't get one with glass or anything too fancy lol

From what I've read, don't have him bring pictures with him. Once you get his address, send them to him. Also, I hear its good to bring envelopes that are prestamped, along with a some pre-printed address labels (saves time when writing letters). His recruiter should have a list of what he can and cannot bring, and the theory is with that, if its not on the list, don't bring it. If it is on the do not bring list, DEFINATELY don't bring it. I've also heard that he will be VERY happy when he gets there if he packed very light.

AT&T payphones. I've never seen a military base over the last 5 years that didn't have them, and I've never seen a basic training base ever that didn't have them.

Yeah, the simpler purer days of boot camp. After the first week there he won't have time to think of home, and looking at pictures will get him "IT" recruit status, so no pics until 2nd phase at least, and probably not until 3rd phase, when he comes back from the range. Whereever that is, if your in cali from pendleton, but if your in NC your basically at the same base the entire time I think. He'll be kept pretty busy the entire time, they'll box his civvies up until he gets out so he won't really be able to touch anything except some money he might have bought to buy necessities. He won't be able to buy them unnatended until he nearly out of there so If he brings nothing he might be happier...and better off for it

They're gonna call him a faggot and made him dump out all his shit.

Get him anything he wants and just send it to his house or something. Let him open/enjoy it later

    Honestly.
