[approx $800 to spend on an AR-15]

what "essentials" would you want? Assuming the money spent doesn't include optics off the bat, but you'd want the ability to add them in the future. Also w/no experience building a gun from scratch. Any suggestions? :x:

thats a tight budget for an AR, but i would get:

    cheapest receiver i could find
    cheapest LPK i could find
    cheapest stock i could find
    CMMG upper

that would be close to $800 for new parts. you could always get used and get parts made by "better" companies.

There's no way 800 would cover a complete rifle + optics anyway, so that constraint is pointless.

RRA upper + Double Star, Mega, or other less expensive lower.. that -might- get you under 800ish, but it's going to be fucking tight. At last check the RRA upper I got from Calvin was $462 + $18 to ship. Preassembled lowers are always going to require more coin, too.

Im deciding whether or not to build one or just go buy a fully assembled rifle. It looks like I'm better off just spending a bit more on something fully assembled.

that rifle kit minus the lower is $633, you can buy a stripped lower for roughly $100-120, that upper comes with a BUIS already so you're pretty much set on a base rifle and use the rest for magazines/ammo.

It takes about 10 minutes to put together a lower receiver.

I put together my AR with a complete 14.5" DTI upper (flat top), a CMMG lower, a parts kit, a detachable carry handle with irons, and a standard 6-position stock for $773 (inc shipping). I bought from OT'er Jimmy Pop Cornholio.

    Talk to him. :bigthumb:

go to del-ton.com and get a quality upper with lpk for right around $500...then spend around $120 for an unassembled lower and there you go. spend the rest on optics

I haven't tried that command arms stock but most of their stuff is regarded as pretty junky. I'd get the new magpul moe stock for about the same money before that one. It doesn't have a rail on the stock (wtf anyway) but its gotta be more solid.

I could be wrong though, maybe its great...

The CAA one isn't terrible. It's better than the standard M4 stock. I find the Magpul CTR/MOE stocks more comfertable and more soilid though.
