C#? Java? VB? Something else? I'm not going to make this one a poll, so if you want to vote, then just please post which language that you think is OT's official programming language.

    This is research for OT.

    Java.

OT users are not all on windows. And why worry about having to compile on multiple platforms? If written properly, Java is fast, and provides excellent cross-platform compatibility.

One for VB. One for Java. My vote goes with C#, simply because C# is stealing the Java programmers, and it's also sucking in a lot of VB people.

VB, mainly because I haven't screwed with C# yet (but I hear it kicks ass)

I'm splitting my vote between Java and C++ for portability and sheer power.

C# is my personal preference - I hate VB.

jolly's platform argument is a good one. Many CP regulars dabble in more than Windows. Personally, my language of choice is C#. But for OT, I'd say Java takes it.

Yeah, I hear that. I actually code in VB.NET at work now. I just can't get used to the syntax. :(

The VB Family is what I write in, my vote goes for that.

At work i use VB, VB.net, Asp, Asp.net, SQL, and Javascript mainly.

Rarely, I will have to work with a different language because someone else started the code.

C# and as far as platform independence, don't forget about mono. I use it pretty often for compiling C# on linux, etc

And for some of us, Windows is just for dabbling :o

I guess I'd go with Java as well, the cross-platformness is nice, as well as the fact that the compiler and VM are very standardized so no matter where you write it, it's almost guaranteed to work on any other system you may want to compile it on.

I could have sworn I replied to this thread a couple of days ago... In any case, I, personally, would go with C++, because I use it every day. However, I've noticed that a lot of OTers use VB...
