or does google treat bans on a subdomain basis?

Like if I have subdomain1.mydomain.com and it gets banned, will subdomain2.mydomain.com and subdomain.mydomain.com still be fine? Or would the ban be mydomain.com wide?

no. not because of the first one. they may be banned for the same reason the first was...but I can 100% tell you that you can get sub domains banned and have others on the same domain not be effected.

Edit: I'm referring to STRONG domains with very solid back links.

Simple answer: no, the whole domain will not be banned.
