I want to get rid of my 2.4ghz p4 processor and mobo, and replace it with a decent amd processor/mobo. will I have to reinstall windows if I do this?

it is better to, but you do not have to. Just boot to your windows cd and do a repair and it will reinstall all your mobo drivers

With your old motherboard in place, go to device manager and remove your IDE controller drivers. Windows will use a generic IDE driver on your next reboot and with your new motherboard in place, you'll avoid the dreaded 'inaccessible_boot_device' BSOD...

Optionally you could also use sysprep to do something similar.

Sysprep is the best thing to do if you really want to swap boards without reinstalling. Though a clean install is a better idea to avoid any possible chipset/driver conflicts.

I wonder if people move all their 4 year old french fries and empty water bottles from their trade-in to their new car...
