If I consume a lot of protein, am I consuming a lot of amino acids too?

Just curious. I always knew that protein was necessary for bodybuilding, but I'm a newb when it comes to amino acids.

P.S. Ran a search for amino and protein, mostly found threads about supplements and clean bulking.

Amino acids are the building blocks for protiens. Amino acids have four diff. structures. I.e. to start with you have the base linear amino chain, which folds etc, joins with other tertiary structures forms various bonds (hydrogen, disuplide etcc). It is the quaternary structure which is correct structure for protein then there are diff. classifications of protein. So when your body breaks down protein it breaks it down into its consitutent molescule which are amino acids. So if you eat a lot of protein you will use most of it in various bodily functions, that not used is excreted as nitrogen. the reaason you would take protein in a diet is to that is can be broken down to constituent amino acids which do things like:
    growth and maintenance of bones,
    strength and flexibility of muscle,
effectiveness and efficiency of the immune system,
formation of some hormones and almost all enzymes,
the binding and support tissues that hold us together (connective tissue),
    blood-clotting functions.

    I hope that helps, Will

sorry for neva posting, this was the only post i thought i could reasonably answer.

So protein is basically different kinds of amino acids (ie. building blocks)?

Yep, theres about 20 diff. amino acids and protein is just a polymer of them.

20 essential amino acids, there are actually a lot more...that are used for other things :)

Um, your body can only use/make 20 of them, and those are used to make up millions of different types of proteins.

Um, there are only 8 essential ones, the ones your body can not make. The others your body can make from those 8.

I think some are confused, as someone says their is only 8 essential ones and 20 total.

What some may be thinking of is amino acid derivatives which are used in our endocrine system etc.
