and someone snatched it, i wonder what would happen?

i guess the lawyers wouldnt need to spend more than 10sec choking the guy, and taking his house, and erasing him from the earth....before they would offer a few mil for the domain back?

    just a crazy thought

Most likely no money, other than hiring attorneys, would be needed. Facebook owners most likely have "facebook" trademarked so that helps out a lot. They would contact ICANN who would pull the domain registration from the potential squatter.

Basically there's rules and procedures that have to be followed when there is a domain name dispute. But it wouldn't be terribly difficult for the likes of "facebook" sized companies to win. Your average joe to go after a big company or squatter on the other hand is a whole other story.

Edit: If I am not mistaken, I think this situation happened to Microsoft a few years back with a TLD in another county, like www.microsoft.ca (but not Canada, a European country if I am not mistaken). It didn't take long for Microsoft to regain control of the domain. Perhaps a day or so.

i recall some details around the microsoft issue...or maybe it was another huge company...where the guy just gave it back to them, and they gave him a lifetime supply of their product.

You're right, the guy wouldn't have it for more than 10 seconds. The likely thing that would happen is facebook would get their attorneys after the domain registrar to fix their own screw up and not even mess around going to this dude. Yeah I believe a guy had a domain mikerowesoft.com I'm not sure if his actual name was Mike Rowesoft, or if he just claimed that as a name.

Basically if you have a trademarked term in your domain be ready to turn it over. Some companies don't care as they see it as marketing their product or service, but other companies do. I had 2 trademarked domains that I had to turn over to a very well known company. Their senior attorney basically sent me a C&D letter demanding I stop use of the domain and turn it over to them. FYI, there are scam artists out there who will try to pretend to be xxxxx company and intimidate you to get you to turn the domain. Always wait for the C&D letter. For the domains I had, they were parked so I didn't really care too much.

Not really. That's a completely different situation as the guy explains on his web site. He owned a computer business called Nissan, before the car manufacturer came into existence with the same name. This guy has a valid domain name and isn't "domain squatting" as Nissan car manufacturer would like us to believe.

I highly doubt the owners of Facebook will forget to renew the domain before it gets expired. Even if they do, like other people have mentioned with a little help from one of their attorneys they could get it back easily.

Im pretty sure that most major websites have people that keep up with that shit. I know some of the larger companies that I work on have preventative maintenance and thats part of it
