I'm writing Java for the first time in like 6 months and I don't know any of the APIs, and I have no idea wtf I'm doing. Thats ok, though because Eclipse helps so much you don't have to know wtf you're doing... it guides you through it. Feels like solving a puzzle. Super fun.

Netbeans 6.1 is greatest thing since sliced bread.

For any project worth it's salt IDE is pretty much a must.

Yes. This is the case with most things computer. Another example: I hate OS X as its an unstable piece of shit. I love OS X because its the best desktop OS available.

I switched to Komodo IDE for Perl/JS/SQL and like it better for everything but Java.

i don't know why you like IDE so much. SATA is so much better. though, if given the choice, i'd prefer FC other both.

Eclipse is soooo unstable for me. NetBeans works pretty good.

IDEs are always a love-hate. They can really help you work through a project with an API you've never used, but in general, I find them to be SUCH a pain in the ass for being a glorified text editor.

I've been loving Eclipse for a while now. Visual Studio has definitely improved though, especially if you install Resharper (in fact, Resharper is a must).

A good IDE will not only speed up your coding, it will also improve your programming practices and knowledge of the programming language you're using too.

Of course you still have to have a good fast clean simple text editor too that fires up super-fast when you just want to have a look at some source files (SciTE for me, hands down).

Working on a large project without an IDE is just subjecting yourself to unnecessary pain. Hell, working on any project without an IDE.

If you're using a loosely typed scripting language, that's one thing, but if you're working in Java or C# or something... why wouldn't you?

I quit using it for most of my work because it is slow and unstable on OS X.
