I'm not sure how this would work, but I was kind of thinking about this and some of the recent posts we've had here...

Has anyone listened to Car Talk - usually on Saturdays on your local IPR station (Internation Public Radio - if I remember correctly). They have a segment where a caller calls up with a wacky problem and they try to figure it out over the phone. Ideally, the call back a week or so later letting the hosts know what the found problem was and if they were right or not.

I'm not sure if this could be re-tooled for a forum. So I toss the idea out and see if this sparks any interest. My first thought is a wacky/challenging PC problem is stickied for a few days or a week (whatever). It would be open to comments as well as feedback from the original poster. The trick is the poster would have to follow up as to what they discovered the real problem was and who was the poster that had the right answer first.

I think this might be a win-win situation. The poster gets their problem solved. CP folks are more motivated to help out and post. The poster with the correct answer gets some kudos, bragging rights, and/or respect from the CP forum. Others get to sharpen their troubleshooting skills.

    Thoughts? Ideas? Comments?

it would need to be catagorized, because some people don't know programming, some do, some know *nix, some don't and so on. I don't think we could collectively get stumped though.

I was thinking more along the lines of posts like this:

    http://forums.offtopic.com/showthread.php?t=841641

I'd say we'd stick to applied computing and not theoritical computing. Thats how Car Talk works as well (at least the times I've listened).

The idea is everyone can play along. Just because the way this forum works, I'd predict a good number of "my computer won't do [X]" type questions which are mostly hardware issues. Although I could see other flavored questions being good canidates as well...
