i'm going to buy an Apple laptop before fall semster. it'll be used primarily for surfing and word processing. i'm not big into video games or anything like that. i'm guessing iBook will be the way to go, but what do you guys think?

Powerbook. Don't fuck around. Get the 128 mb VRAM and upgrade the RAM after you buy it fron NewEgg. You'll never look back. Don't get the iBook...you'll always wonder if you could have had more...

Buy the powerbook, because if you don't, you'll always wonder if you could have possibly spent more on a portable word processer.

Seeing as you are considering both... I would suspect price is no object.

So! Even if you may not need the POWER of a powerbook, it still looks fucking nice compared to a iBook.

I'd go for the ibook, but i'd go for the 14" instead of the 12", since the 12" is really small (though ultraportable) and the hard drive might end up filling up too quickly for you. Unless you're absolutely sure you're going to carry it around alot, I'd go for the 14".

Another thing I'd do is buy a little more RAM for it. I have 256 in my ibook, and it had difficulty working more than Instant Messenger, Firefox and iTunes, which is what is typically running on my computer at any given time. So if I start another program, like Word, it'll start chugging a bit :sad2:

I'm going to upgrade to either a Powerbook or PowerMac this fall :)

i have a 12" ibook G4 1.2ghz with 768mb ram, and a 100GB hd. i have no complaints. its fast enough to run all my programs, do all my projects for college, store everything, and pretty much anything else i want. The only thing it wont do is play sick games, but who really has time for games anyway? :o

fuck. i just gotta say i love my PB, money well spent. however if you don't have the money, then just go for the iBook. But when you do get a powerbook and when you turn on the screen, prepare tissue for ejaculation purposes

well, like i said, i'm not a gamer and have little to no interest in it. however, i spend a considerable amount of time on the internet, so having a fast internet is a primary concern. i store a lot of picture on the computer, so a bigger hard drive would be nice. i use AIM once or twice a year. i have free long-distance on my phone, so if i want to talk to someone, i'll call them. i love music, so there will be lots of that too. oh, and i need to process words on the run.
if i get an iBook, it'll be the 14" superdrive. if i get a powerbook it'll be the 15" superdrive :hsd:

The bigger screen won't really make a difference, the 12" and 14" ibooks run the same resolution, so on the 14" everything will just appear bigger, and you won't be able to see more stuff. As for the original question, i would just get an ibook. It doesn't sound like you the power of a powerbook, or the 64mb video card.

the ibook felt very cheap when I handled them. The powerbook seemed much more solid. Get the pbook.

I've had my 12" iBook for about a year now and love it, but I've always been tempted to get the 15" pb. I just took the plunge tonight and ordered the new pb. I'm sure that I'm pretty similar to you (OP) that I don't do any graphic intensive stuff and use it mainly for surfing the internet and word processing. However, if you are remotely a techno geek like me, get the powerbook for the form factor and wow factor. To the person who thought the iBook felt cheap, I have to disagree. I fly often and pull my iBook out everywhere and it feels solid no matter what I do to it.
