I don't know for IBM, but most corporate discounts on products like that are in the 8%-12% range...you can do just as well using a coupon during a sale at best buy.

My neighbor works for IBM and he allowed me to use it when I bought my Thinkpad several years ago...it's only like 10% though; I got a $1150 laptop for a little over $1000. Like 7960 said, you'd do just as well with a coupon at Best Buy or Dell.

Best of luck getting past the fact that IBM doesn't make laptops anymore. :hahano:

Lenovo/IBM...same thing. Lenovo simply bought IBM.

The question is whether IBM employees still get discounts on laptops made by a division owned by another company.

I'm not sure, but from a similar experience I'm going to guess they do.

my father works for IBM and I know for a fact he still gets a good discount on the ThinkPad. That said, he gets an even better discount on the desktops/workstations/servers.

    negative, ghostrider.

Lenovo has always manufacturered for IBM. They simply choose to now make that caveat more public.

And yet the Department of State only got worried about using Thinkpads once they stopped sporting the IBM badge. Ironic.

Isn't the real difference, though, that IBM no longer retains design control over the machines, whereas before Lenovo's equipment had to pass IBM's Q/A tests?

I work for IBM and have no clue what the discount on Thinkpads is. As previous posters have said, I would guess around 10-12% depending on the model.

Lenovo bought the IBM PC division in 2004 for $1.29 billion, not IBM itself. They (IBM) still sell plenty of other products.

If you don't want a Mac I would suggest a Thinkpad

nope. The ThinkPad has *always* had the IBM logo. "ThinkPad" is still registered to IBM, I think.

Your boss must have gotten the generic "3000" series. Which is in no-way a ThinkPad.

Yep. The 3000 is supposed to be the "consumer" line. A friend of mine recently bought a 3000 series, and he's been quite happy with it so far (played nice with Linux, etc). I'll be interested to see how it holds up.

I get a corporate discount through work on their laptops. Our company buys a lot of the T60s. As far as a discount for employees, we don't get more than usually $100-200 off retail.
