Hey, just wanted to get some opinions on IBM/Hitachi hard drives. I have a laptop with a 4200RPM 80GB Hitachi Travelstar drive in it right now, but I am really considering upgrading it to the 7200RPM 60GB Travelstar. My biggest concern is the reliability of both Hitachi drives. In the past, I have gone through about five IBM desktop hard drives, both IDE and SCSI that failed for one reason or another. I have never had such failure with any other brand. Basically, I am just wondering if anybody out there has tried the newer Hitachi drives, particurly the laptop drives. I don't want to buy a drive that's going to be dead in six months...

I upgraded to a 7200 RPM 60GB Hitachi the day I got my laptop. I've been using this thing at least 12 hours a day since I got it in early June and it's worked great so far. It only ever gets just slightly warm with the processor side of the machine getting significantly warmer...and it's definitely both fast and quiet.

I would not hesitate to get an IBM/Hitachi notebook drive, but when it comes to their desktop/server drives, I need my 10 foot pole.

i've had all 3 of my ibm desktop drives go dead on me. on the other hand, all 3 of my ibm notebook drives are still working perfectly. several of them are more than 3 years old.
